Adventures at Sea - Week 4

The latest update we received from the team rowing the Atlantic was that they were right on the edge of where the doldrums, and the trade winds meet. They were hoping that their southerly position meant that they’d get swept up by them soon, and like a magic carpet, start flying towards their goal, Antigua!

For now however, the ocean is like glass. No movement and not a breath of wind. Rowing in the high heat they’re experiencing means that they’re sweating like piglets. The sun, salt and lack of razors have also contributed to itchy beards and have led to Rex and the team taking it in turns to pour buckets of water over each others heads to try and keep cool.

To keep up the motivation they’ve spent the nighttime listening to PG Woodhouse - it’s about the only thing they’ve been able to concentrate on! And during the daytime they have Amy Winehouse Back to Black playing on repeat.

The team have told us that for every 0.1 of a knot that they average on their speed means 13 hours less on the boat. But spirits are high! With the promise of trade winds returning soon.

Amongst the hard work and struggles, the team have had numerous animal encounters throughout the journey, whether it be dolphins, whales, flying fish and even a shark! The clip on this page shared by Rex, shows a Minke whale. Minke whales are the smallest among great whales. This particular Minke must have been intrigued by the team's oars and is obviously cheering them on!

Another goal Rex is close to reaching is his fundraiser for Tackling Minds. Tackling Minds offers those struggling with mental health, addiction and disabilities, the opportunity to escape to a riverbank, or out on a boat, and go fishing. At the time of writing this, the fundraiser was at 93%, so close to hitting the target goal!
